He said that the main cause of black fungus is uncontrolled diabetes, not using steroids properly along with toxilizumab during treatment. It is the patient who stays on ventilation and takes supplemental oxygen. Within six weeks of corona treatment, if any of these causes occur, the patient is at the highest risk of developing black fungus . He also warned that taking cold oxygen directly from the cylinder could be very dangerous for patients.

Dr. Chandra said that even using a mask for 2-3 weeks is like inviting black fungus. The anti-fungal drug posconazole can be given to people at higher risk to reduce such incidents.
